What is Bowen?
What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen is a Complementary Therapy that works over the muscle and connective tissue to realign and balance the body.
How is it performed?
It is achieved through gentle rolling moves and procedures applied to specific points on the body. Theses moves are separated by pauses (or 'rests') which allow the body time to respond and begin the process of healing and repair.
Who can use it?
Bowen is extremely gentle and adaptable and can therefore be used on most people, including pregnant women, babies & children and the elderly.
What is it used for?
Bowen treats the whole body, helping it to align and rebalance. In terms of particular issues, however, people have experienced great relief from conditions such as back pain, slipped disc, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis/golfer's elbow, frozen shoulder, arthritis, strains/sprains as well as headaches, migraines and hay fever to name a few.
As Bowen Therapy stimulates an integrated body response, people report improvements to respiratory issues (such as asthma, COPD), digestive problems (such as IBS, Crohn's, Celiacs, acid reflux) and reproductive issues (such as PMT, menopause, polycystic ovaries, fertility problems).
What should I expect in a Bowen Session?
In our first meeting, I will require a full medical history, including a list of any medication you are taking. I will also be collecting some 'markers' on the issues you are presenting with, such as levels of pain, any limitations of movement, daily tasks you are struggling with, etc. These will provide us with some measurable outcomes to mark your progress in each session.
The Bowen sessions will take place on a therapy table (or chair if mobility is greatly limited). The treatment itself is very gentle and does not involve deep or prolonged pressure or any kind of adjustment. The moves can be made over most clothing (except for denim jeans) so there is no requirement to undress down to underwear if you would rather not.
In between some of the moves, your body is given rests of several minutes at a time to process and respond. During these rests, I will leave the room (unless you request that I stay) to allow you to fully relax.
What should I expect after the treatment?
Although the treatment itself is very gentle and you may not think much is going on, reactions after treatment can be very variable. Some people feel tired and achy, whereas others feel little change initially. Occasionally, people report that the pain gets worse for 24-48 hours before getting better.
It is also advised that you drink plenty of water and get up and move about every waking hour or so to avoid stiffness.
How many sessions will I need and how frequently?
Obviously without knowing individual details, this question is difficult to answer. I would say that most clients see significant change after 3-4 sessions. In the case of an acute injury, if seen quick enough, one session may be all that is needed. In the case of chronic, long-term illness, regular ongoing sessions may be required. Ideally, we aim to leave a week between sessions to allow the body a chance to respond and reset, although anytime from 5 to 10 days is fine.
